Part 3 – Life back in the UK
Getting back to the routine
Over the next few months I came back down to earth and spent my time getting back into my routine, the daily 3 hour round trip commute to work and a plan to start making things happen for the future in terms of my partner and I living together whether that be in Jamaica or the UK, getting married, sorting out work options etc.
Creating my own opportunities
By this point, I was 4 months into a 6-month work contract where I had been working for an international organisation, which coincidentally had agents based in the Caribbean. To be honest this is the main reason why I accepted the job, because of the potential to work and relocate to the Caribbean.
“Don’t sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them.” Madam CJ Walker
Eavesdropping paid off…
I overheard a conversation with the international consultant who sat just behind me over the phone with the agent based in Jamaica. So I followed up this conversation and found out that the lady in Jamaica was retiring, a great opportunity was staring me in the face. I contacted the head of the international agents’ team based at our London office and a Skype interview was then arranged, I was so excited at the possibility of potentially getting a job working for an international company based in Jamaica – this would have been the answer to all my prayers!
However, my prayers were not answered on this occasion which I found incredibly disappointing at the time.I later learned that my prayers were not answered for a reason bigger than I could have ever imagined!
Feeling lost – how am I going to make this happen?
I was feeling a little lost after I didn’t get the job based in Jamaica and was seeking some clarity as to the next direction to take in order to make my dreams come true; such as moving to Jamaica and finding a job there, sending for my partner to come to the UK temporarily until we had a plan in place to return to Jamaica, an option where I could potentially work for myself to make the transition easier. The list of things going on in my life to work through was endless!
Over the past year or so I had looked into a few different options and had an interview with the Jamaican tourist board, I was actually offered the job but unfortunately, the job was based in London and not Jamaica. I had also applied for a few roles based in Jamaica for the likes of the University of the West Indies and the mobile network Digicel. Along with looking into opportunities where I could work remotely such as a social media manager or a virtual assistant or for a US-based company as the time zone is more in line with Jamaica.
I had begun exploring my networks in addition to obtaining my Jamaican citizenship to make all of this possible, so you can imagine my frustration when I was unsuccessful in getting the role for my current employer-based in Jamaica.
If you are interested in looking for work in Jamaica or another Carribean island I would recommend taking a look at Carribean jobs as a good starting point and if your father or grandfather are Jamaican you can apply for citizenship by descent and for your TRN number (It’s like a national insurance number). You can do this directly with the Jamaican embassy based here in the UK and they will send the paperwork to Kingston Jamaica for processing. It will make the process so much smoother when you begin looking for work.
My tarot card reading – a message gone un-noticed
I was feeling incredibly frustrated and a little lost so I decided that it was time to have a tarot card reading, this is the second tarot card reading I have had. Other than feeling a little lost I’m not quite sure what the motivation was for this at the time other than it just felt like something I needed to do.
I had my first card reading about 5 years ago, I was very sceptical about it at the time and didn’t know what to expect. But surprisingly many of the things that were out of my control and that the lady told me came true. Seeing as I felt I needed some clarity and direction in life I decided to have another card reading and I visited a different lady this time.
I found the card reading to be very generic in comparison to the first one I had done and I didn’t feel that I could take much from it at the time. The main things she mentioned were to do with my career and how I would be teaching people what I know and how successful I was going to be…that was about it. Also that there was definitely going to be a change in my career and that I would be working from a different location.
What did stick with me, was just as I was about to leave she hesitated and looked at me very seriously, she then told me that she wasn’t going to say anything to me but she thought she should. She said that there was an older woman, an ancestor and she was sweeping peas. She said to me that this lady is watching over me and protecting me. I didn’t think anything of it and left…Let’s just say that in the coming months it all became crystal clear!
Missing my love – time to return to Jamaica
A few months had passed and I was really missing my partner, especially as it was coming up to his birthday and I couldn’t travel to Jamaica at the time due to work reasons. My contract was due to end soon so the plan was for me to visit him at the end of the work contract. I continued to monitor flights but they were unusually highly priced for the time of year, which I remember thinking was strange, so I waited and didn’t book anything.
A verse from our song…
“We’ll be together
And it won’t be long
It won’t be long
But it seems like forever
And it’s out of my arms
Baby cuz i’m missing you now.”
